Best Wineries Near Cape Town

There are hundreds of wine farms within an hour of Cape Town. These are the estates that turn up repeatedly on the tours worth booking — grouped by region, with what each is actually known for and which tour reaches it.

Constantia — inside the city limits

Groot Constantia has been producing wine since 1685, which makes it South Africa’s oldest producing wine estate, and it sits about twenty minutes from the Cape Town CBD. Cape Dutch architecture, a manor-house museum, cellar tours and a working farm — it is the one estate you can visit on an afternoon without leaving town.

Klein Constantia, next door on the Constantiaberg slopes, makes Vin de Constance, the sweet Muscat wine that was shipped to Napoleon in exile and turns up in nineteenth-century European literature. It is the most storied bottle in South African wine.

Beau Constantia is the modern one — a small hillside estate with a glass tasting room and a view down the valley to False Bay.

Constantia is served by half-day tours from Cape Town rather than by the big winelands day trips, which head east instead.

Stellenbosch — the deepest choice

Tokara sits high on the Simonsberg slopes above the town, known for Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon and premium olive oil, with one of the widest views in the district. It appears on the Winelands and Wine Tram tour, the small-group four-estate tour and the private winelands day.

Delaire Graff, on the Helshoogte Pass between Stellenbosch and Franschhoek, is the design-led estate: art, sculpture, gardens and a view that does most of the work. Also on the small-group and private days.

Delheim is the old-guard Stellenbosch family estate, and the counterweight to Delaire Graff’s gloss on the same itinerary.

Lanzerac matters historically more than architecturally: the 1959 Lanzerac Pinotage, released in 1961, was the first commercial bottling of South Africa’s own grape. Visited on the Winelands and Wine Tram tour.

Stark-Condé is tucked at the head of the Jonkershoek valley with mountains on three sides — small production, and the clearest example of what a private tour buys you, since no group itinerary here reaches it.

Beyerskloof built its name entirely on Pinotage; Beyers Truter planted the first vines off the Koelenhof road in 1988 and the first Beyerskloof Pinotage was bottled in 1995.

Marianne is the French-owned Simonsberg estate on the Uncork the Cape half-day.

Franschhoek and Paarl — the valley and the river

Boschendal is one of the valley’s grand old farms, and turns up on chocolate-and-wine pairings as often as on straight tastings.

Babylonstoren, a restored Cape Dutch farm at the foot of the Simonsberg dating to 1692, is as much a garden as a winery — its formal fruit and vegetable garden runs to several hectares and is a destination in its own right.

How many estates can you actually see?

Two on a half-day. Three on a standard three-region day like the 3 Regions tour. Four on a four-estate day. Four or five stops on a Franschhoek Wine Tram line, though there you pay each estate’s tasting fee on arrival — see wine tram vs guided tour.

More than four in a day is not a good idea. Tastings need forty-five minutes to be worth doing, and there is driving between them.

A note on named estates

Operators name their estates because it sells the tour, and the good ones do visit them. But availability, private functions and harvest logistics occasionally force a substitution. Treat a named estate as a strong intention rather than a contractual guarantee, and if one specific estate is the entire reason you are booking, message the operator before you pay.
