Cape Winelands Tours from Cape Town

“Cape Winelands” is a district name doing a lot of work. It covers several distinct wine regions in the mountains east of Cape Town, and a full-day tour from the city typically reaches three of them: Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and Paarl.

They are not interchangeable, and the reason a full day beats a half-day here is that seeing the differences is the point.

Three districts, three characters

Stellenbosch is the largest and the oldest in touring terms: its wine route was approved in April 1971 with eleven members — the first in South Africa — and now coordinates more than 150 wineries. Estates climb the Simonsberg and the Helderberg, and the town at the centre is the second-oldest in the country.

Franschhoek is a single enclosed valley 75 km from Cape Town, settled by French Huguenots in 1688 and ringed by the Groot Drakenstein and Franschhoek mountains. Smaller, prettier, French-named, and home to the wine tram.

Paarl sits between them on the Berg River, with some of the largest estates in the Cape and the granite dome the town is named for. It is also where Drakenstein Prison stands — the gate Nelson Mandela walked out of in February 1990 — which most three-region itineraries stop at for a photograph.

Drive between them and the landscape changes visibly: different slopes, different exposure, different soils. When to go
