Franschhoek Wine Tours from Cape Town

Franschhoek is the winelands region people fall in love with, and it is also the one that most often gets planned badly. Both facts come from the same source: it is a small, enclosed valley about 75 km east of Cape Town, and it is not somewhere you drop into for two hours.

The valley was settled in 1688 by French Huguenot refugees, granted land by the Dutch government at the Cape after Protestantism was outlawed in France three years earlier. That is why the town is called Franschhoek — “French corner” — and why the estates carry names like La Motte, Boschendal and Grande Provence rather than the Afrikaans and German names you find one valley over in Stellenbosch. The Huguenot Memorial at the head of the town commemorates them; several tours make a brief optional stop.

Geographically it is an amphitheatre: the Groot Drakenstein, Franschhoek and Wemmershoek mountains close it on three sides with the Berg River running along the floor. There is one main road in and one high pass out. That containment is why the valley photographs so well and why an afternoon there feels like a proper excursion rather than a stop.

Why Franschhoek is a full-day proposition

Stellenbosch works as a half-day because it is 50 km out. Franschhoek at 75 km, plus the drive time each way, does not leave enough hours to be worth the fuel.

So Franschhoek tours from Cape Town are full days, and almost all of them pair the valley with Stellenbosch on the way in — which is a better itinerary anyway, because the two regions are genuinely different and the Helshoogte Pass between them is one of the finest drives in the Cape.

The Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and tram day does this in eight hours with a tram section included. The tram is a separate decision

The Franschhoek Wine Tram is the valley’s most recognisable attraction, and it is a ticket, not a tour. From Cape Town you buy a package that combines the return transfer with a hop-on hop-off tram ticket for the day — you choose one of five colour-coded lines, ride between estates, and pay each estate’s tasting fee on arrival, typically R60 to R260 per person.

Eating in Franschhoek

The valley has the highest concentration of serious restaurants in the winelands, and lunch is where a Franschhoek day quietly gets expensive. Almost no tour includes it. Budget R250 to R400 for a straightforward estate lunch and considerably more if you eat somewhere ambitious — and book, because the good tables go.
