You start with time on foot in Stellenbosch, then taste at Lanzerac and Tokara — two estates that could not be less alike, one all Cape Dutch history, the other a modern glass-and-stone building with one of the best views in the valley.

Lanzerac matters more than its architecture suggests: the 1959 Lanzerac Pinotage, released in 1961, was the first commercial bottling of South Africa's own grape. Tokara sits high on the Simonsberg slopes above Stellenbosch and is as well known for its olive oil as its Sauvignon Blanc.

The afternoon moves to Franschhoek for the wine tram section, then the run back to Cape Town.
