About This Experience

The Franschhoek Wine Tram is the most recognisable thing in the Cape Winelands, and this is the version that solves its one real problem: getting there and back from Cape Town without driving. You are collected in the city, driven the 75-odd kilometres east into the Franschhoek valley, and handed a hop-on hop-off tram ticket for the day.

The tram itself is a mix of restored open-sided tram cars and open-air tram-buses running colour-coded lines through the valley. You pick a line, ride it, get off wherever the estate looks good, taste, eat, and climb back on when the next tram comes past. Most people manage four to five of the eight stops on a line — which is the honest number, not the eight the marketing implies.

Understand the pricing before you book: the ticket buys you the transfer and unlimited tram rides, not the wine. Tastings are charged by each estate on the day, typically R60 to R260 a person, and lunch and cellar tours are extra too. If you want a day where everything is prepaid, a guided winelands tour is the better fit. If you want to choose your own estates and linger, this is the one.
