About This Experience

African Eagle has been running this route for years, and it shows in how the day is paced. You get about an hour and three quarters in Stellenbosch, two vineyard tastings, then the drive over into Franschhoek for a short ride on the wine tram — a taste of the tram experience without committing the whole day to it — before finishing in Paarl.

Stellenbosch is the anchor. The vineyards here grow Chenin Blanc, Shiraz and Pinotage, the last of which was created 20 minutes from where you will be standing: Professor Abraham Perold crossed Pinot Noir with Cinsaut at Stellenbosch University and planted the seeds in 1925. Any decent guide on this route will tell you that story, and it lands better with a glass of it in your hand.

Practical notes: the pickup is from your accommodation rather than a fixed stop, so the start time flexes with where you stay. Lunch is not included, but there is an optional picnic on one of the wine farms, and there is a brief optional stop at the Huguenot Memorial in Franschhoek. Tips are not included.
